I'm a semi-pro saxophonist with over 60 years experience. I practice daily, I play in several rehearsing/performing ensembles—both jazz and “legit”--and I have a standing weekly jazz gig, as well as several paying jazz jobs per month.
I needed a back-up instrument because my beloved Mk6 (my only working horn) had to go to the repair tech for over a week.
I had watched Dr Wally's YT reviews, and after calling JP and pleading with them to make sure my purchase would be ready to go out of the box, they sent me their AS860 Anniversary Edition in just two days. The anxiety of buying a horn sight-unseen was somewhat mitigated by JP's provided video of the play test of my actual item, as well as by Dr Wally's endorsement.
So how does it play and sound? The JP's sonic and ergonomic properties seem similar to the YAS 62's I have tried over the years—i.e., excellent intonation and smooth keywork, utter ease of low and high note production, and apparent robustness of construction. Like the Japanese brands however, it lacks the diffuse, breathy, multi-overtone, Desmond-like timbre of my Mk 6. Nevertheless, the JP acquitted itself nicely on my weekly jazz gig, and I doubt anyone but me heard the subtleties of tone I felt were missing. (Surprisingly the best results for a darker sound came from using the supplied mouthpiece, rather than any of my high-end MP's! Unheard of!)
As a back-up horn for a picky performer, I couldn't possibility ask for more at this price point. Moreover, I have decided to use the JP exclusively for my concert band work (with my S80 C* MP), as The 860 sound is more in line with the tone color, projection, and intonation of my band-mates Yanis and Yamas.
Good work, JeanPaul!
I ordered the pro saxophone. The saxophone plays well, but it came with visible scratches on the side D key above the staff, a rust spot and a little dent at the bottom of the saxophone and the Rico ligature was missing. I had to call to have them send my Rico ligature that supposed to come with my order.
According to my saxophone teacher, the sound and build of this instrument is good. The only difficulty I had was adjusting the neck strap, perhaps in part owing to Parkinson disease. So I had to go to a wind instrument specialty shop in Boston and purchase a more suitable neck strap (it cost $107.)
Beautiful soprano saxophone which plays great. Also, can’t say enough good things about the Jean Paul staff and their helpfulness in selecting and shipping the saxophone!
A very beautiful instrument, and while I am learning trumpet, its use is quite easy. Jean Paul, to me, put genuine efforts into making a great sounding and responsive tool! Just wish I had more time daily to practice between secular work and family obligations. My trumpet was and is worth the funds I spent in obtaining it. I've named it 'Smooth Operator'.
I will happily revisit this review as soon as the order is delivered.
Nice sax, I’m an adult starting to playing journey. I rented one for a couple of months and wanted something permanent. My only issue is i bought a silver on but it doesn’t look that like silver. It’s more of a silver gold mix. Not 100% what i expected. it sounds very good!
I am frustrated from the sax I received it has some problems specially the tone G
I can’t put into words how happy she is with her new Soprano Saxophone! Even her instructor loves it, he helped her properly tune it so she is playing it with correct tones.
She did say that the reeds of course were RICO and they are not as good as Vandoren but we will get those instead! I did wish the case to be 100% hard not the soft case with the hard shell so I was disappointed in that aspect but she didn’t care and liked that it has a strap to put over her shoulder since now she has her Alto Saxophone to carry too!
Grateful the shipping required a signature which gave me piece of mind it wasn’t going to just be dropped off when delivered!
The instrument itself is absolutely beautiful live the anniversary edition with the two tones! We will have real mother of pearl inserted in the keys by the music shop we use in town, he does amazing work and that will bring the value up considerably!
I purchased this 2 weeks ago. If there's anyone out there looking for a saxophone that isn't a student model and don't wanna spend a small fortune for an instrument, this is the one you're gonna want to buy. This is an absolutely gorgeous horn. When I open the case to practice, I get genuinely excited to play. In top of the wonderful looks, it sounds amazing. I couldn't ask for more from this purchase. Along with the play test video and super great customer support, Jean Paul has my business. Thanks
My son is enjoying his new saxophone. It sounds beautiful!
I found the saxphone's sound to be different the the student model who's sound I LOVED. It's more focused and subdued. The key work is incredible, fluid and responsive. However, I found the altissimo to be difficult to sound. I tried a different neck, a Yamaha V1 - and the sound opened up and altimissmo became much easier to sound. So I had to return the Sax in hopes they develop the neck a little further in a future model, or offer a different neck option with the purchase. I just ordered a student model in silver to see if it re-creates the amazing experience I had with the brass colored model, which might be the best tenor sax I 've every played --- I sold it to a friend, because I only play silver horns. DEFINETLY worth a try!! It can match the performance of much more expensive horns.
I love it so, getting back into playing. With this horn I'm more confident hitting notes in the upper registers. The slotting is good and solid especially the notes on top of the staff. I'm happy and will suggest Jean Paul to anyone wanting a pro level horn on a budget.
The JeanPaul student alto is amazing! The build quality is solid and the horn feels quite comfortable. Although I do think that the spatula/roller keys are a little difficult to reach. Hopefully that is fixed in the future. My neck cork was a little too short but it will do for now. The intonation is almost perfect and the horn provides a dark, resonant and full sound. The key action is smooth and responsive. The pads sealed nicely too. The bell engraving design is pretty and makes the horn feel more sophisticated. The case is pretty good and I like the addition of the backpack straps. Not many student Saxes come with these features at this low of a pricepoint. I would definetely recomend this Saxophone to beginers or intermediate players.
Not sure why it took so long for me to get the item but I am happy that it actually works and fits correctly. Kudos for that. I believe the price needs a bit of adjustment since it is just 1 part. Thank Goodness that is the only part of the trumpet that was missing.
Sound and quality are good, especially for the price - got it in silver which is really nice looking
I need to talk to someone with authority in your bussiness as we recieved a yellow gold sax instead of a Silver Alto Sax. And we have one VERY disappointed young lady!
It's been over 20 years since I last played and wasn't sure how it would go to pick up again. But this sax is a dream--both to look at and play. Wish I'd done this sooner!
